How do I create a box that I can place a checkmark or an X in?

Assuming you mean on a worksheet instead of a userform, you do view/toolbars/Forms and you'll see a check box icon. Click this, clik or drag into the sheet, change the prompt. You should also right-click it, select Format Control & assign a cell to it so that when it's checked, the cell says TRUE, else says FALSE. Then your worksheet can refer to this cell, since without VBA code, you can't refer to the checkbox itself. HTH
