Time Calculation

Posted by Ted Shaughnessy on February 14, 2002 4:41 PM

Need to be able to calculate minutes early from a scheduled time. I can get the minutes past a scheduled time but not the early part.
I.E. Scheduled time is 9:00 and the time stamp shows 8:55. Need to see (0:05) or -O:05....etc.

Basically trying to track time past and schedule or time made up on a schedule.

Excel won't give you negative time values. But I don't see anything wrong with =A1-B1 where A1 is 9:00am and B1 is 8:55am. Even if you tried to use something like ="("&a1-b1&")", it would turn the format into text and wouldn't display the 0:05 anymore.

Lots of info on dates and times (hope Mr. Excel doesn't mind!!) at the bottom of this page:

Actually, Excel will give you negative time values.

If you change your date options to "1904 Date System", Excel will calculate the formula above as -0:05.

Many thanks to Aladin Akyurek for teaching me this little tidbit!
