In January 2022, the Wordle game is blowing up social media, with so many Twitter posts of people showing the Wordle score for the day. I love that there is only one Wordle word each day. It takes 3 minutes of your life and then you are on with the rest of your day.
What is Wordle? You have six tries to guess a five-letter word. After each guess, the game color-codes each letter in your guess:
- Green: This letter is in the correct spot
- Yellow: This letter is in the correct word, but not in this spot
- Grey: This letter is not in today’s word.
Each color tells you something important. If there is no “S” in the final word, then you’ve just eliminated 4000 words that contain an “S”. If a green tile tells you that “T” is the third letter, then you’ve eliminated all but the 450 words with at in the third position.
After playing the game for 10 days, I realized that Excel functions like MID and FIND could be helpful in showing which words are still “in play” after each guess.
Watch this video and download the workbook. Some people say they use this only after completing the puzzle manually. Whether you use it while actively playing or after the fact, it can make you a smarter Wordle player.
