Excel Files on a Novell 5.0 Network

I am a network administrator, and I have several users that have their excel files corrupting. They open a file to edit, not sure what happens from there, but then every time you open that file afterwards, you get an application error on any machine you try to open it from. I constantly have to go back to tape backups to recover these files. Is there any way to bring these files back from the dead to save the work that may have been done, or better yet, has anybody ever heard of problems with excel files corrupting on a novell server?

There is a known issue with saving Excel 5.0 documents to Novell drives (not sure what versions of Novell, or perhaps all). Even users on Excel 97 will often save down to Excel 5.0 because that stupid paperclip tells them that's what is the recommended version to save to! If you see that this is the case, make sure that they are saving in the latest version and this may help alleviate some problems.
